Different types of hybrid dentures displayed in a UK dental practice

If you are looking at tooth replacement options, you’ve likely come across the term hybrid dentures. They’re increasingly popular across UK dental practices, and patients are choosing them more.

However, what most patients don’t realise before their first consultation is that “hybrid denture” isn’t a single product. It’s a category, largely shaped by the material the dentist chooses to custom-design the false teeth.

Here’s a plain English breakdown of what you need to know about this special type of denture.

What is a Hybrid Denture?

A hybrid denture is a full set of replacement teeth built on a strong structural frame, then covered with a tooth-coloured finish. It’s designed to feel secure in your mouth whilst still being removable by a dentist if needed.

Hybrid dentures sit somewhere between a full denture and a fixed bridge. They are removable but are also fixed enough for daily use that patients often forget they’re wearing them.

Unlike traditional removable dentures, hybrid dentures are typically secured to dental implants, offering far greater stability, a more natural bite, and improved long-term bone preservation.

Hybrid dentures are sometimes called detachable dentures or implant-supported dentures.

The 3 Main Types of Hybrid Dentures

1. Acrylic with a Titanium Frame

This is the most widely used hybrid denture and the most accessible in terms of hybrid denture cost in the UK. This type has a base constructed from high-grade acrylic resin, which is internally reinforced with a titanium metal framework for increased rigidity and durability.

Best for: Patients seeking a cost-effective, stable solution with a natural-looking finish.

What to consider: Acrylic can wear over time and may require periodic polishing or adjustment. It is, however, easily repaired if damaged, which is a major advantage over harder materials.

Typical UK cost: £3,000–£6,000 per arch, depending on the number of implants.

2. Zirconia Hybrid Dentures

Zirconia hybrid dentures are the premium choice for patients who want false teeth that look completely natural and last as long as possible.

Zirconia is one of the strongest materials used in dentistry today. It won’t stain from coffee or wine and holds up well under normal biting and chewing pressure. Because it mimics the translucency of real teeth, most people won’t be able to tell that you are wearing false teeth.

Best for: Patients with a strong bite, those who clench or grind, and anyone prioritising longevity and aesthetics over cost.

What to consider: Zirconia is more difficult to repair than acrylic. If it chips or fractures, the entire denture may need replacing rather than repairing. It is also heavier, which some patients tend to notice.

Typical UK cost: £6,000–£14,000 per arch. The higher price reflects both the material and the precision milling process.

3. Porcelain Fused-to-Metal (PFM)

Porcelain-fused-to-metal dentures have a metal base with a layer of porcelain bonded over the top. The metal provides strength and structure, whilst the porcelain gives the teeth their natural-looking colour and finish. It’s one of the longest-standing options in restorative dentistry, with decades of clinical use.

Best for: Patients who want a more established technology with a long clinical track record.

What to consider: Porcelain can chip against opposing teeth, and the metal margin could become visible near the gumline if the gums recede. Newer all-ceramic options have largely overtaken PFM in some private UK practices.

Typical UK cost: £4,000–£9,000 per arch.

How to Choose the Right Type of Hybrid Dentures

The hybrid denture type depends on your individual health profile, not just your budget. Your dentist will consider:

  • Bone density in the jaw: A thinner or weaker jawbone may limit which implant configurations are suitable to support the hybrid dentures.
  • Bite force: Patients who grind or clench their teeth need a harder-wearing material, such as zirconia.
  • Gum position: How much gum is visible when you smile affects which materials look most natural
  • Number of implants needed: This influences both the cost and the prosthetic options available.
