The treatment journey

What Happens During Your Dental Hygiene Session

Our hygiene sessions start by ensuring your comfort. Details of your session will be fully disclosed in person.

1Welcome

Welcome and Comfort Check

Take a few minutes to settle into your chair comfortably. Your hygienist will ask about tooth sensitivities or other issues to adjust the session to match your needs.

2Examination

Oral Examination

The hygienist will carefully check your teeth, gums, and soft tissue. Early signs of decay or gum disease are flagged before cleaning starts.

3Cleaning

Hygiene Cleaning Begins

The clinician will use an Air Flow device and/or specialised tools to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and between the gums.

4Polishing

Polishing and Flossing

Once the cleaning wraps up, surface stains on enamel are polished away. A thorough flossing clears any leftover debris.

5Advice

Oral Care Advice and Wrap-up

Your session will end with your hygienist advising you on at-home care, which may include brushing advice. You will leave with brighter, cleaner teeth and a follow-up plan.

Patient questions

Common questions about dental hygiene cleaning

Clinician speaking with a patient

Teeth scaling clears out the plaque and tartar built up around your gumline and between teeth, while polishing smooths the tooth surface to make it look brighter and shinier. Both are performed together for a single dental hygiene pricing. You can opt out of tooth polishing if you prefer.

Not typically. You may feel some pressure or a bit of vibration if your gums are relatively healthy. If not, you might feel some sensitivity. Your hygienist can numb the area first if you'd rather not feel anything.

For most people, once every six months is the recommendation. But if you have gum disease, you may need up to four or more hygiene sessions per year. Your dentist will recommend a frequency depending on your oral health condition.

No, teeth scaling is very safe and does not damage enamel. Your enamel is tougher than anything used to remove tartar. What actually happens afterwards is teeth feel smoother, sometimes a shade brighter, once all that build-up is gone.

Tartar clears away, especially below the gumline, and that can expose root surfaces that were covered before. Hot, cold, sweet stuff might catch you off guard for a few days. Sensitivity toothpaste helps, and it settles on its own regardless.

A bit, yeah, though don't expect the same result as proper whitening. Tea, coffee, wine, smoking, all of that lifts off during a scale and polish, and teeth often look brighter for it. Want more of a change? Ask about a dedicated whitening treatment at any of our practices.
