Compare your options
Here's how NHS and private care differ, so you can choose what best suits your family.
| NHS | Private (Complete Smiles) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free for children under 18 (under 19 if in full-time education) | Fees apply, but with more flexibility in treatment choice |
| Waiting Times | Typically a longer wait for routine appointments | Same-day appointments without lengthy waits |
| Choice of Dentist | May not always see the same dentist at each visit | You see the same dentist every time, building familiarity and trust |
| Appointment Length | Often shorter, with less time to ask questions | Longer, unhurried appointments with time to talk through everything |

Patient questions

Our dentists recommend that you bring your child for their first dental visit when they are at least a year old. The first teeth typically appear at six months, and getting a dental check-up around that time is recommended as a preventive measure.
School-aged children should have a dental check-up ideally every six months, or more if they are particularly prone to cavities. Even without an obvious problem, regular dental check-ups are important for early detection of tooth decay or teeth misalignment issues, which are easiest to treat when caught early.
Yes, dental X-rays are considered safe for children. We use digital X-rays, which involve a fraction of the radiation of old-style film. We only take them when there's a real reason to, so your child will not be exposed for unnecessary reasons.
Yes, as untreated problems in baby teeth can sometimes worsen into conditions that extend into adulthood. Besides, oral health affects your child’s overall health, happiness, and social well-being. Therefore, treating problems in baby teeth is highly recommended and even necessary.
Of course, stay as long as you like. Most of our young patients are accompanied by their parents who stay for the duration of the appointments. Older teens who are comfortable travelling by themselves can visit on their own with parental approval.
Our children’s dentists are available at Harrow Town Centre and Harrow-on-the-Hill clinics during our regular open hours. Out-of-hours urgent appointments are available at Harrow-on-the-Hill clinic. Kindly call in advance to enquire about paediatric appointments at our Stafford or Bournemouth clinics.
