When you bite your favourite apple and feel a weird movement of teeth, it leads to an unsettling shift of a loose tooth. Unlike children, where a wobbly tooth is a visit from the Tooth Fairy, an adult loose tooth can be a concern. Adult teeth do not wobble so commonly as they should be firmly rooted. What causes a loose tooth? Gum disease, and some more serious root causes are discussed below.

Gum Disease (Periodontitis)

Unhealthy gums lead to gum disease, medically known as periodontitis – the most common cause of loose tooth in adults. It is the result of plaque, a semi-solid, sticky substance that coats the surface of teeth. If plaque is not completely removed with brushing and flossing, it turns into tartar, which causes inflammation and infections in the gums.

Over time, the supporting tissues and teeth bone tend to move due to loose teeth from periodontal disease. Initial symptoms include red, swollen bleeding gums and persistent bad breath. Left untreated, loose teeth gum disease can eventually lead to receding gums and loose teeth, making them more vulnerable to falling out.

Dental Trauma

Some dental trauma leads to teeth moving. It can be because of an accident, sports trauma or falls. The force can break the ligaments and bones that support the tooth, resulting in mobility.

Teeth Grinding

Bruxism is a term used to define the habit of teeth clenching or grinding, often without being active during unconscious sleep. This persistent pressure can degrade tooth enamel putting the supporting tissues under strain and eventually loss of teeth.

Stress, teeth misalignment and some medications are the major causes of bruxism. People with bruxism might have jaw pain, headaches and tooth sensitivity as well.

Osteoporosis

It is a systemic loss of bone density that reduces the body’s ability to maintain itself leading to weak bones that break easily. It can also impact the jawbone which holds your teeth.

As the jawbone deteriorates, the teeth may weaken and loose. Women are especially prone to oral health complications related to osteoporosis. Early osteoporosis detection and management is possible with the support of regular dental check-ups.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, hormonal changes can affect the periodontium (the structures that keep teeth in place). The high concentration of progesterone and estrogen increases blood approach to gums leading to more sensitivity and inflammation. This condition called “pregnancy gingivitis” may advance to periodontitis and make your teeth loose.

Oral Cancer

Occasionally, oral cancer may cause loose teeth. Tumours or lesions in the oral cavity may arise and invade/erode the bone and supporting tissues of teeth. Persistent soreness, gum bleeding or lumps in your mouth are early symptoms of oral cancer.

Oral cancer screening are important, particularly for tobacco users, heavy drinkers or those who have had significant sun exposure, which are all indicators of developing oral cancer.

Preventive Measures

To save your loose teeth and to make your teeth strong and healthy, these are the preventive measures to be taken:

  • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, and floss regularly. If possible, use a mouthwash to minimise the accumulation of plaque and gum diseases.
  • Plan regular dental check-ups every six months to check for early signs of periodontitis, tooth decay, or receding gums and loose teeth.
  • Avoid tobacco, as it is a major risk factor for loose teeth from periodontal disease.
  • If you engage in contact sports or clench your jaws at night, use a custom mouth guard to avoid pressure on them.
  • Work on a proper diet fortified with calcium and vitamin D to maintain healthy bones and teeth.

Conclusion

Loose teeth in adults need to be addressed early as it can lead to gum disease and other oral health issues. Hope this blog guides you with the main causes of the loose teeth which need to be treated early.
