Jaw discomfort can impact your entire life because it affects essential daily activities like eating, speaking, and even sleeping. The pain can range from mild discomfort to sharp, persistent aches, occurring on the left side, right side, or both, depending on the underlying cause. Understanding the reason behind your jaw pain is the first step toward finding the right treatment.
Common Causes of Jaw Discomfort
Jaw discomfort can depend upon several factors, such as dental problems and lifestyle issues. Here are some of the most common reasons behind jaw discomfort:
Cause 1: Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge-like joint that connects your jaw to the skull. It allows movements like talking and yawning. When this joint functions properly, these actions feel smooth and effortless.
However, issues with the TMJ can lead to temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). This disorder can cause discomfort and restricted movement. TMD can result in symptoms like clicking sounds in the jaw and persistent pain. If your jaw clicks, it could be a sign of TMD, requiring further evaluation to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
Cause 2: Ear Infection and Jaw Pain
Ear infections can send the pain down to your jaw, especially if the ear infection is left untreated. The close proximity of your ear and jaw can develop inflammation or pressure in the jaws and can later develop severe ear and jaw pain.
Cause 3: Wisdom Tooth Pain in Jaw
Wisdom tooth pain in the jaw is frequently caused by impacted or erupting wisdom teeth, especially if they are tilted or infected. This can lead to discomfort, usually concentrated on one side of the jaw.
In some cases, the pain can become more severe if the wisdom teeth press against neighbouring teeth or nerves, causing increased pressure and inflammation. If left untreated, this can lead to swelling and even jaw stiffness.
Cause 4: Bruxism or Teeth Grinding
Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is often overlooked among other common jaw discomfort causes. During sleep, when the teeth grind involuntarily, it can produce overexertion in your jaws, ligaments, and joints.
It leads to pain, swelling, and sometimes headaches too. This condition can eventually develop TMD or worsen other problems associated with the jaw.
Cause 5: Stress and Anxiety
If you are under stress, sometimes you may unconsciously exert pressure on your jaws by clenching them or by grinding your teeth. It can eventually tighten, hurt, or ache on one side of your jaw or even both sides.
Often referred to as jaw tension anxiety, this condition can strain the jaw muscles and joints over time, leading to persistent discomfort. In such cases, you should focus on preventative methods like stress management and jaw exercises.
Cause 6: Sinusitis
Sinuses are hollow, air-filled cavities located in the skull near the eyes and nose. When they become congested or infected, the buildup of pressure can extend to the jaw, often causing soreness in the teeth and swelling in the cheek area.
This pressure can lead to a dull, aching sensation in the jaw, which is sometimes mistaken for dental issues.
Reasons for Jaw Pain on One Side
While jaw pain commonly affects both sides, certain conditions can be the reason for jaw pain on the left side or the right side, depending on the cause. These include:
- Jaw pain due to wisdom teeth: If your wisdom tooth is impacted or infected, you may experience pain on the side where the tooth is emerging. This discomfort can intensify as the infection worsens.
- Other Dental Issues: Problems like abscessed or cracked teeth can cause sharp, localised pain that radiates to one side of the jaw.
- Facial Injuries: Trauma from an accident or a direct impact can result in one-sided jaw pain, depending on the location of the injury.
- TMJ Disorders and Jaw Tension Anxiety: TMD or jaw clenching due to stress can start as pain on one side but may gradually spread to both sides over time.
- Nerve Disorders and Other Medical Conditions: In rare cases, trigeminal neuralgia — a nerve disorder — can cause sudden, severe pain on one side of the face.
Managing Jaw Pain: Self-Care & Professional Treatments
It can be quite troublesome when you have jaw pain, but there are options to deal with it. Starting with self-care tips is always good. A warm compress may relieve your jaw muscles.
It's also important to avoid hard or chewy foods that put extra strain on your jaw. Instead, opt for softer foods to reduce pressure and discomfort. Additionally, practising relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or gentle jaw stretches can ease tension and promote healing.
