Nervous patients
An underlying fear of dental treatment can often stem from a previous bad experience and it might mean you’re reluctant to book in for regular check-ups or to have treatment. But being a nervous patient shouldn’t get in the way of your oral health. It’s never too late to improve your oral health, and we have a number of ways we can help you overcome your anxiety.
We have dentists at our dental practice who are experienced in treating nervous patients. We’ll make sure that from the moment you arrive at the practice, we’ll provide the assistance you need to make your visit as easy-going and stress-free as possible.
Conscious sedation
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental procedures if you are nervous. It’s sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” although you are usually awake with the exception of those who are under general anaesthetic.
We provide our nervous patients with oral sedation dentistry solutions. Typically, a pill is given to the patients an hour prior to the procedure. The pill will make you drowsy, although you’ll still be awake. Sedation is most appropriate for people with a real fear or anxiety that is preventing them from going to the dentist. It can also be appropriate for patients who have a low pain threshold, can’t sit still in the dental chair, have very sensitive teeth, have a bad gag reflex or need a large amount of dental work completed.
For more information regarding this treatment give us a call, 020 4541 1150 and we will be more than happy to assist you in any way.
We understand that going to the dentist can cause fear and worry. If you’re anxious about seeing the dentist, below are few tips to ease your fear:
• Once you have found someone you think may be suitable, visit the surgery to familiarise with the dentist, communicate with the receptionist. Let your dentist know that you’re a nervous patient so they are aware.
• Always pick an appointment time early in the morning so you have less time to think about it and can take a day off from work so that you can go straight home.
• Talk to your dentist about using the numbing gel before using the needles.
• Take a friend or family member with you to your appointment.
• Use headphones to listen to music of your choice, it will help you relax during your treatment.
Before you have sedation for your dental appointment your dentist will go over your medical history to make sure sedation is appropriate for you. This will include asking about any current medications you are taking.
We will give you an oral pill to take one hour before your appointment. This will put you into a relaxed state and make you feel sleepy, although you will be awake during the treatment.
We can help with the nerves you may experience toward your appointment by offering you oral sedation. You will be giving the pill one hour before your treatment to help you relax before the procedure.
You will need someone to accompany you to your appointment so they can drive you home afterwards. You will be able to leave the dentist after a 20-30 minute recovery period and the effects of the sedation will wear off gradually during the day.

Wherever necessary, treatments are carried out under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout. Our dentists will continually check that you are feeling fine during the entire treatment. This can make a huge difference for nervous patients as dental phobia is often centred around pain.
Your appointments will continue at whatever rate is comfortable for you. Your first consultation might involve a simple discussion or explore the Clinic, without an examination.
